Samothrace is located in the Thracian sea, about twenty two nautical miles away from Alexandroupolis. It is a special island, rich in fresh water streaming out of its countless springs. It is a mountain surrounded by sea, full of trails that lead to virgin forests with age long plane trees and cedars, with smells of thyme and oregano. Rivers and waterfalls offer images that will stay forever vivid in the memories of the visitors.
The summit of mount Saos is at 1611 m. and it is called Fegari. According to Homer, this is the place where Poseidon sat and watched the Trojan war.
The port of Kamariotissa is connected to Alexandroupolis on a daily basis and the trip lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes. The picturesque Chora is located in the steep mountains, a location that used to offer the necessary protection against the raids of the pirates during the middle ages. Today, it is a jewel with its stone-built paths, the traditional cafes, the breathtaking view from the Castle, the Folklore Museum, the calmness and the joy it has to offer.
At the North of Chora we find Palaiopolis, the archaic and hellenistic center of the island. This is where the Sanctuary of the Great Gods is located. In this archaeological site the visitor comes in touch with the ancient history of this blessed place.
Heading towards the Northern part of the island we reach the beautiful Therma, filled with sycamores, rivers and springs. Here we find the unique small pools created by the waterfalls known as “Vathres”, as well as the therapeutic sulfurous thermal springs which heal the body as a whole, while being especially effective on dermatological problems, blood circulation, and arthritis.
Close to Therma we find the municipal camping of Platia, that o
ffers unique relaxation and nights under a sky full of stars. Leaving behind Therma, we reach Fonias. Walking along the river and next to the forest for about 30 minutes we approach the first large pool. If we keep going up the mountain we will approach more pools among which the most exceptional, “Kleidosi”, where the waterfall reaches 35 metres.
